Stage 1: Kadaň – Chomutov

The first stage begins in historic Kadaň and runs through Prunéřov to Chomutov. The next part of the stage takes you through areas in close proximity to open-pit mines and ends in Chomutov near Kamencové Lake. The stage is 23.5 km long.

In Kadaň, the route begins a short distance from the Eger River and heads toward Prunéřov, where you’ll ride past the power plant. The route then continues along the quarry. At the Zelená junction, you can briefly turn off the route and ride to the Málkov observation tower on Skřivánčí Hill. From up here, you’ll have a bird’s-eye view of the entire brown coal basin, a massive open-pit mine, power plants, and the panorama of the Ore Mountains. The route then continues through the village of Spořice straight to Chomutov. From the route, you can also take a short detour to visit the beautiful Kamencové Lake or the neighboring zoo. These are just a short distance from the center of Chomutov, where the first stage ends and where you can find lodging.

In terms of surface and safety, the first stage runs mostly along newly built dedicated bike paths and quiet third-class roads. The surface is mostly asphalt, with some gravel sections. There is an unpaved section near the village of Spořice, but it is less than 1 km long. Expect heavier car traffic toward the end of the stage in Chomutov, where the route follows a road (Spořická Street) for about 1.5 km.
