From Kadaň to Industrial History and the Longest Earth-Fill Dam

1557
Start: Kadaň46 km

This cycling trip takes you through an unusual landscape where the power of modern industry blends with successfully restored nature and recreational spots. The trip starts in Kadaň at the roundabout by the bridge over the Eger, where you leave the main Eger Cycle Route and join the Pánevní cyklotrasa no. 66.

You ride along high-quality paths through Kadaň and across Roosevelt Park. You leave the town over reclaimed spoil heaps that have already been fully returned to nature. The real industrial tour begins in Prunéřov, where you pass the unmistakable Prunéřov II coal-fired power plant. From there you continue along an asphalt cycle path to the village of Černovice near Chomutov. The route follows the edge of the Nástup open-cast lignite mine, which offers a fascinating view of the mining basins. From Černovice you have to ride an approximately 600-metre section of unpaved field track. It calls for extra care, especially in wet weather, but is passable even on trekking bikes. After passing through the village of Spořice, turn onto cycle route no. 3080. It will take you to the village of Březno, where you can cool off at the natural swimming lake with a pleasant little pub.

From Březno you ride a little further on route no. 3080 until, after about 3 kilometres, you join long-distance cycle route no. 6 right below the Nechranice dam. With a length of 3,280 metres, Nechranice is the longest earth-fill dam in Central Europe and in summer it is a popular recreation hub. On its beaches you can soak up the sun, try sailing or windsurfing, and of course there are refreshment stands and campsites where you can relax. From the dam you return to Kadaň along the official cycle route no. 6. Be aware, however, that this section is not a dedicated cycle path. The route follows ordinary roads through the villages of Vikletice, Poláky and Rokle, where you need to expect heavier car traffic as well as several climbs. Cycle route no. 6 then reliably brings you back to your starting point in Kadaň.

Route: Kadaň – Prunéřov – Černovice – Spořice – Březno – Nechranice reservoir – Kadaň (back along cycle route no. 6 - mostly on roads)

Cycling distance: 46 km

Ascent: 320 m; Descent: 320 m
